One of the seven angels who had poured out the seven bowls came over and spoke to me. “Come with me,” he said, “and I will show you the judgment that is going to come on the great prostitute, who rules over many waters. The kings of the world have committed adultery with her, and the people who belong to this world have been made drunk by the wine of her immorality.” Revelation 17:1-2
In the Bible, gods other than the God of Israel is referred to as prostitution. God lumps them all together and calls “her” Babylon. This includes churches that have wandered from the truth like prosperity gospels that serve the god of this world: Mammon. You may have heard one of their sermons they go like something like this: God wants to bless you (give you lots of money) because He loves you. What’s wrong with that? It’s idolatry. God wants you to worship Him not money.
While this chapter is highly allegorical, it represents a real threat to the church. The beast is the monster of all the false religion that doesn’t just snare people of other faiths; Christians are snared by it too. I was too. I was the customer of a prostitute making me an allegorical john. No I was never involved in literal prostitution, but it’s just as bad.
I had purchased books by a false teacher who rose to prominence and filled a stadium every Sunday. Sorry, Joel, I bet you miss the tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars your cult isn’t bringing in. I was a member of a small Christian cult back when I was young. I had new age books on my shelf (which were recommended by a cross wearing “Christian.”)
Back to the chapter which is so critical for Christians to understand. Chapter 17 occurs after the rapture of the church, but it’s important to know that God is going to judge Babylon severely. We have to be sure of every teacher (allegorical prostitute) we follow.
