Ok there I said it. We are. We love jerks too. We marry jerks and we follow jerks. We pay money to see jerks. What’s up with that? Why do we believe the nonsense that jerks are cool and desirable?
I’ve loved narcissists, drunks and cheaters. I’ve held them in really high regard. Jerks can be highly motivated and productive, but the truth is: they are not good for us.
What causes people to be jerks? Many things people claim are the reason: environment, childhood, and genes. What’s the truth? All of these factor in to the root problem: sin.
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23
The glory of God is Jesus. So we could paraphrase this and say we’ve all sinned against God we’re not as good as Jesus. The new living translation put it this way:
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
Yeah, we all know that. But what can we do about it? Well, we really can’t do anything; but fortunately God has thrown us a metaphoric life preserver. His spirit living in us can’t drive out our tendency to be jerks.
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6, verse 23.
Someone has paid the fine for your sin!
Jesus has paid your fine!
What can you do to receive this gift?
- Confess your sins to God the Father and ask Him to forgive you.
- Believe in Jesus the Son of God from deep within your heart and soul and confess it with your mouth.
- Repent with the help of God, the Holy Spirit
This is the narrow gate. Few find it. Seek God and you will find Him. We get a choice: fair, righteous judgement or forgiveness. Grab on to the life preserver God is throwing you. It’s a good deal.
