A lot of times people will ask why God would allow something bad in their life. That’s a really good question; even I have asked it. I asked why did two of my grandparents commit suicide and why did my father die when I was 13. I may have asked why I had to go through abuse and miss out on things my friends enjoyed. This question can be attempt to avoid getting one’s spiritual life in order. Sometimes it’s a genuine question, but often we don’t want to give up our sin.
And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. John 3:19
In psychological terms, they call it STERBs. That stands for short term energy reducing behaviors: drinking, smoking, overeating and drugs. These produce a short term reward, but leave the person empty inside. Searching the Scriptures is a better way to handle the stress life throws at us.
Run to God.
Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105
God shows us in the Bible why suffering happens. It’s many different reasons depending on the situation so one cookie cutter explanation doesn’t fit every situation. Because he wants us to have a relationship with him, we can go to him directly and ask him why he allowed situation X in our life. I have found God is a faithful friend and he’ll answer me and I ask him a question like that.
Say to those with fearful hearts,
“Be strong, and do not fear,
for your God is coming to destroy your enemies.
He is coming to save you.” Isaiah 35:4
We can be sure God knows what’s going on and can be sure God is in control. So the next time someone asks me “Why would a loving God allow bad things happen to good people?” I am going to ask them how many hours they are going to allow me to answer that because it needs at least five hours to answer that question well.
The short answer is we are not puppets; we are free.
God didn’t hurt you. The enemy did! God didn’t take from you the enemy did. Satan’s purpose is to rob, kill and destroy. That’s not God’s purpose for you.
