Your Friends Matter

Dear ones, I say this in love, pick your friends better. Don’t think you can hang out with non-Christians all the time and be okay. You think you follow God part-time and be just fine. Rethink that because, rest assured, you will regret it.

I am reading through Numbers and it’s pretty awesome how this book has some great messages from God in it. They jump off the pages and go straight to the soul. Today Numbers 33:52 and 55-56 did that.

Destroy all their carved images and their cast idols, and demolish all their high places.

Numbers 33:52 b

55“ ‘But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land, those you allow to remain will become barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will give you trouble in the land where you will live. 56And then I will do to you what I plan to do to them.’ ”

Numbers 33:55-56

Following God means idols don’t belong in your life. Sometimes friends aren’t really our friends. They intend to introduce their idolatry to you. I’m thinking of one particular person in my life with whom I’ve tried to do that, and now that I’m on the other side of it, I’m thankful that person is gone from my life. Dear ones, let people go if they don’t draw you nearer to God. You can rebel and hold onto that friendship, but eventually you will lose it and you will have a sad story to tell about it.

Follow God wholeheartedly as He directs you now. Disobedience will bite you eventually.

God has a ministry plan for you. Grab hold of it and run with it. Get rid of the distractions and friends that keep you from that ministry. Friends who are growing Christians will point out when you are not on point spiritually and help get you back on track. I’m not saying don’t reach out to the world and don’t take them out to lunch to try to reach them. I am saying don’t have close fellowship with them.

You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. James 4:4

It’s better to lose a non-Christian friend than to lose heaven’s plan for you. A Christian friend shares your end goal: holiness and heaven’s plan. God doesn’t want you stuck in your sin. He wants you to live a life of peace and joy.

So think again about who you let into your close circle; bring everyone to the cross. Honor Him in all your relationships; He won’t let you down.
