You’ve seen them at your door and you pretend you are not home. Or you open the door and cringe. Either way, it’s two smartly dressed Jehovah’s Witnesses or two guys in white shirts and dark ties on bicycles from the Mormon church. Many people cringe and try to quickly brush them away. I do the opposite; I’m excited to have a captive audience for the gospel – the true gospel.
I received letters in the mail from two Jehovah’s Witnesses. I keep writing them, sending them tracts and personal letters. The word of God is a seed and has the power to save even on bad soil like a Mormon or Jehovah’s Witness. My goal is to keep them engaged as long as I can at my door so that they’re not at somebody else’s door leading someone astray, and possibly getting them saved in the process.
We are sinners, every one of us. Many of us have memorized Romans 3:23 in the KJV. That includes the Mormon and Jehovah’s Witness. They know it. They have a distorted vision of who God is and so they act accordingly to try to earn their way to Heaven.
These two cults talk about Jesus, but they’ve made a false god counterfeit that is nothing like the Biblical Jesus. The Mormon Jesus counterfeit has wives and kids and came from a planet called Kolob. In their idolatry, they pair Jesus and Satan as brothers. This is straight out of pits of hell! The JWs demote Jesus to a lesser god and fail to recognize Him as the Almighty God. They claim He is a created being. They are also a works religion, which is why they go knocking on doors and are writing letters during Covid. Work it!
Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.
John 14:1
It’s the same word πιστεύετε in the Greek for both instances of the word believe. They are the same because He is the same. He’s not a made up God. He is the one true Almighty God – Emanuel, or God with us!
So, what do JWs and Mormons have in common? They are both idolaters because they’ve made up a version of God that’s not in the Bible. Both deny the power of the cross and existence of hell. So what does that have to do with us?
God loves everyone and wants all to come to repentance and trust in Him. As we draw near to God, we are getting His heart for the lost. We pursue them. If you’ve tried to pursue them but failed because they have arguments for everything, then you may consider adjusting your strategy.
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15
There are many YouTube videos, books and courses on how to win cult members to Christ. If you don’t know their doctrine, it’s like not knowing the enemy in a battle.
- Go to equip.org
- Follow Living Waters on YouTube
- Pray for opportunities to win cults
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
1 Peter 3:15
Be prepared to give an answer, but in love and sincere respect. Gentleness is the key. A harsh tone will negate sincere words and feelings. Cult members sincerely believe what they’ve been told by their cult; it takes love to see them freed. Know that the seeds you plant do not come back void. Pray for Holy Spirit help when witnessing. When you are trying to win an idolater’s heart, you are engaging the enemy and you need Holy Spirit help.
Lastly, read Romans chapter 4. It clearly discusses salvation by faith. It does so using Old Testament heroes.
