Problem With the Prosperity Gospel

The prosperity gospel has a strong grip on the church. An overabundance of prosperity gospel preachers contribute to it, along with people’s desire to be in a better situation financially.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Jesus in Matthew 19:23

God doesn’t promise us riches, and the gospel isn’t about money as people have made it out to be. “God wants to bless you,” they say. There are several problems with this kind of theology.

The first big problem with this theology is this world is not our home. His rewards are in the next kingdom. Financial blessings are not promised to believers and anything else is a different gospel than Jesus preached. Are you following for financial blessings or for gratitude for forgiveness of your sin?

The prosperity gospel preaches an expectancy that is bound to fail. God is not going to give you a million dollars if you send a thousand to a TV preacher. What God does promise is to meet our needs. Our needs are simple: food, water, and shelter. He doesn’t promise a vacation home in an exotic place.

The prosperity gospel promises breakthroughs. You’ll hear things like your breakthrough is on its way, just claim it and believe it. I am sure that is not in the Bible anywhere. You can’t tell God what you want like He is some blue genie! But if you send $225 for a dvd set, the prosperity preacher promises you will get your wish (miracle). He’s getting rich off of our gullibility.

What happens when a believer isn’t blessed financially? Is that God withdrawing from that person? No! A relationship with God isn’t about getting goodies from God. Your treasure is where your heart is. Let it not be in this world.

Prosperity gospel preachers show no serious Bible teaching. They will include words like victory, abundant, and conquering.

My biggest problem with prosperity gospel preachers is their focus… money. You can’t serve God and money. Who do you want to serve? Hopefully it’s not Mammon (the “god” of money).

God thinks you are very special, but He is not a genie. He wants to bless you spiritually, with intimacy with Him and spiritual jewels in His word.

Be blessed with God’s presence.
