We hear a lot about salt these days but mostly how it’s bad for you. Salt is important to the human body. It helps with nerves and muscles and it is used with fluids like tears. We can’t survive without salt and we each contain several salt shakers’ worth of salt in our body. We need salt, just not to excess.
13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. Matthew 5:13
Yep, we are salt, spiritually. The rock salt of Jesus’ day was unprocessed, so it wasn’t pure. There were no plastic bags to store it in and salt dissolved easily, leaving behind worthless minerals. You couldn’t throw it in the farm fields or the crops will not grow, so they threw it in the street.
If we lose our saltiness, we become ineffective for the kingdom. We can’t expect our ministry to flourish if there is compromise in our lives. We are kind of like computers: garbage in, garbage out. If we fill our minds, ears, and eyes with worldly content, how can we expect a kingdom harvest?
Make time for God. You don’t need the constant stream of ungodly content pouring into you. Remember whose kingdom we live in now and evaluate your priorities. If you have time for Netflix but not time for a daily devotion, you might want to evaluate whether you are in Christ.
You can be in church but not in Christ.
So how do you know if you are in Christ or just in church? Fruit. Galatians 5:19 fruit. You also have a concern for the lost that results in you sharing the gospel. Unholy things bother you if you are seeking God. You worship Jesus privately, not just in public. You are in His word. Faith comes by hearing and hearing comes by the word of God. If you’re not reading His word and you have access to it, you are depriving yourself of spiritual food. You get emaciated spiritually to the point where you may not even look like a Christian.
The good news is it’s never too late to turn to God and He is actively pursuing you now.
Make Him first and your regret will be that you didn’t do it sooner. Christ followers don’t regret following him they regret the time wasted on the things of this world. Materialism has a strong hold on this world, but Jesus is Lord of all. Your heart is a big deal. Jesus wants to give you a new one.
