And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
Acts 2:42
Here we see that the early church had formed a community. They were devoted. Let’s look at what they were devoted to.
- The apostles’ teaching – Christians need God‘s word. They didn’t have the Bible but they had the writers of the Bible to teach them first hand. We have the Bible so we should be so devoted to it that we can’t go a day without it. If you lived with a spouse or a roommate and didn’t hear from them all day it would be very strange. You have a phone? There’s biblehub, blue letter Bible and through the Word apps. I use all three regularly. I shy away from youversion because it has false Bible versions and heretical teachers on it. With a smartphone in your pocket there is no excuse for not abiding in God’s Word. Faith comes by hearing the word of God. If you’re not hearing the word of God you’re not growing you’re dying spiritually slowly.
- The fellowship – the church is a spiritual family. Seeing each other every Sunday isn’t enough we have to be involved in each others’ lives we are family. If you’re not part of a church family you’re in disobedience because the Bible clearly says you need to be in fellowship. If you don’t like any in your city or town start your own home cell church. It’s easy. I’m willing to mentor you to get started. If you’re in an area that has Covid restrictions it can be done online – talk to me how we can make that happen.
- The breaking of bread – this is the Lord’s supper. If you’re not part of a fellowship you can’t take communion with each other. So get in obedience and get in a fellowship.
- The prayers – community prayer is power and it bonds people together. Incorporate prayer you get help with faith because you see prayers start to be answered.
