We worship our work, work at our play, and play at our worship.
Gordon Dahl
Work is the new idol.
Work is good and idleness is bad, but we can make our job an idol. When work becomes our idol everyone around us knows it. We don’t see it ourselves because we seem to have blinders over our eyes.
How can you know when work has become your idol?
- You can’t take a vacation. You take the work phone and probably a laptop with you as well.
- You don’t take regular days or days off. Sunday is just another day to work. Instead of spending it to worship, it’s last minute chores day.
- You don’t have time for exercise. Your health is the last priority.
- Work permeates our free time.
- You have more fear of losing your job than losing your relationship with Jesus.
- You think friends want to hear about your work. Trust me they don’t. They don’t know anyone you work with. They could not care less about Smith sleeping with Jones to get a promotion. At a non work party you struggle with topics to talk about.
- You feel you are overworked. You are in a self imposed jail of more than you can reasonably do. Sometimes this is valid, but in many cases we sign ourselves up for this.
- Your first thought of the day is work. Jesus sneaks a few minutes in with you, but he’s not on a standing appointment with you.
- You’re tired. Your priorities are all messed up and so you have sleeping issues.
- We love money. it consumes our thoughts. Our investments are earthly desires rather than heavenly.
What should our number one priority be?
Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness; tremble before him, all the earth!
Psalm 96:9
God is either our primary priority or he isn’t.
