Do you need oil? I do.

You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows Psalm 23:5b

So I found out there are 3 reasons shepherds put oil on their sheep’s heads. All three reasons have to do with protecting the sheep (fighting during the mating season, protecting against nose flies and scab disease). It’s an act of love the shepherd does for the flock.

The sheep don’t have a say in the matter nor do they appear to resist the process. Sheep seem to trust the shepherd.

The psalmist said that God anointed his head with oil. How? And how is our head anointed with oil? With His Holy Spirit. Just like the sheep needs the oil applied often so we need to be continually filled with the Holy Spirit.

Praying in the spirit and reading God’s word can help keep that anointed feeling going and protect us from the nuisances of this world. The Holy Spirit builds our faith as we read God’s word. Scripture tells us that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. God’s words are powerful. They created the millions of galaxies and their billions of stars.

And praying in the spirit meets needs we don’t even know we have. God himself is praying for us. How cool is that? God selects the words that we need spoken over us.

And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
