There’s only a couple more days until Good Friday which is when Jesus instituted the observance of communion. Let’s talk about the elements of communion: the bread and the wine. Here’s what Jesus said:
So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
John 6:53
Wow is Jesus promoting cannibalism and vampirism? No. This is metaphorical. He also said he was the bread of life. In Middle Eastern culture, bread represents sustenance. He was saying find your daily sustenance in me.
And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.”
Mark 14:22
Metaphorically, the bread represents his body which was beaten and bruised for us taking the punishment for our sins. He was the ultimate Passover Lamb who took away our sins.
And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.
Mark 14:24
The Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation is weird and unbiblical. It’s to be expected from a religious group that struck out the second commandment to suit their religion. The wine and bread do not literally become flesh and blood. Does it taste like blood or wine? There’s your answer.
Levitical law forbids the drinking of blood because in the blood is life. So this has to be figurative. It’s his life that’s being poured out for us. And as followers of Christ we pour out our lives on others to win them to Him.
Unfortunately, this false doctrine from the “counterfeit of Christianity” has crept over into the real church. Their is a couple of popular teachers that have adopted this nonsense and quite frankly, it’s very repulsive to nonbelievers. They even go so far as to call Catholics brothers and sisters. No. Without new birth you’re not my brother or sister in Christ.
If anyone teaches transubstantiation in God’s church, switch them off. This is figurative and if they can find brothers in false religions what does that say about theirs?
I digress. Back to the blood and the wine. Communion is a solemn time. Jesus died for us and that is the main focus of communion. Unlike our Catholic “not” brothers and sisters, we don’t care which hand we eat it with. Ritual observers care. Relationship minded people don’t care if it’s the left hand or the right hand. A priest scolded me for taking it with the wrong hand. He didn’t care that I was lost. He cared I wasn’t observing the ritual right.
A right relationship with God and your true brothers and sisters in Christ are the main focus of communion. Walk in holiness in and harmony with others and you’ll be ready for your next communion.
