Following Jesus

I’m not a fancy girl. At one time I was. I had many jobs over the course of my life. Once upon a time, I was a model for fashion shows. I still have my portfolio from 40 years ago.

Before every show I did my own makeup. I used to wear a lot of makeup to cover every single imperfection. Flaws are easily hidden with professional quality cosmetics.

Each change to a new outfit required a change of jewelry: new earrings, new necklaces, and new bangles. They were carefully coordinated so that when I hit the floor my outfit would sell.

Underneath that fancy exterior was someone really hurting. God was calling out but I was too broken to fully understand why He would love me.

God looks at the heart. Sometimes the people who you think will not repent will turn to Jesus. Once a person gets desperate, they will do things that they normally wouldn’t. It’s true for many of us. We turn to God when things are bad.

So what makes a follower of Jesus a true follower of Jesus? Only God knows a person’s heart, but you can examine your own life.

  • Are you breaking the 10 Commandments intentionally? If you’re not living holy you’re not a follower of Jesus yet.
  • Are you spending time in the word of God (reading the Bible)? If you’re not reading the Bible, you might want to ask yourself why. Why doesn’t it call to you? Don’t you long for time in his word?
  • Are you an active member of a church fellowship? The church is his body and you have to love it. If you don’t, the problem is you not other people.
  • Do you have a burden for the lost that spurs you to action? Do you share the gospel?
  • Is prayer a big priority for you? The Bible says pray without ceasing.
  • Have you put aside things that no longer suit you? Things that had appeal as a nonbeliever don’t suit a child of God.

There’s some scary verses in the Bible. Many people think they’re going to heaven. But the truth is, many people who think they’re going to heaven aren’t actually going to heaven.

Are you all in? Or are you holding some things back?
