Is the Door to Heaven Narrow or Wide?

Most people believe that if you are a good person, you go to heaven when you die and if you’re a bad person, you go to hell when you die. This makes sense. Good belongs in a good place in bad belongs in a bad place.

That’s not scriptural, though. Being good doesn’t get you to heaven and being bad won’t send you to hell. We are all sinners.

1Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘Youa shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” 4But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise,b she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Genesis 3:1-6

Many people don’t believe in original sin and think we’re all good. They think the door to heaven is wide and the door to hell is narrow and the really bad people will go to hell and most people are good, so they’ll go to heaven. That’s not what the Bible says.

Sin is serious- even one sin. We are born in sin. We’ve all committed thousands of sins to prove that we were born in sin. This is called original sin.

For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. Matthew 7:14

Good people don’t go to heaven, sinners who are saved by the blood of Jesus go to heaven. When God looks at a person who has trust in Jesus for salvation, He sees the righteousness of Christ. A person who thinks himself good in his own eyes will lose heaven. It’s not too late. If you have breath left in you, you can turn around. Turn to God and He will hear the prayer of a sinner asking for forgiveness.
