Who is a child of God?

Are we all God’s children? Will we all eventually make it to heaven? The answer to both is no. While we are made in the image of God, not all of us chose to become children of God.

5God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children.b6And because wec are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.”d 7Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child.e And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.

Galatians 4:5-7

You have to be adopted into God’s kingdom through new birth – a born again experience. Christ adopted us into his family when we were born again and gave us his Holy Spirit. Before we were born again, we were a slave to sin, but now we are born again children of God.

How can we tell if we have God’s spirit in us and if we are God’s children? If you hear his voice in your spirit and you want to obey it, that’s a good sign you are a child of God.

The opposite is also true. You don’t feel his spirit or hear His voice because you are too busy filling yourself with other spirits: alcohol, addictions like work, gaming, and social media.

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

John 10:27

If you’re not hearing God’s voice, you’re not one of a sheep. You’re one of the goats.

31When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, He will sit on His glorious throne. 32All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate the people one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will place the sheep on His right and the goats on His left.

Matthew 25:31-33

The sheep follow what his voice says. I don’t think that many people realize that going to church does not make you one of his sheep. Hearing God’s voice and obeying it makes you one of his sheep. If that is not happening for you, it’s time to make some changes!

  • Seek Him in prayer!
  • Ask for forgiveness and forgive everyone!
  • Read His Word – the Bible! Spend a minimum of 30 minutes in it.
  • Obey His word and when you hear that small voice – obey it.

We shouldn’t take the Holy Spirit for granted it’s a great gift from God. If you are a believer and don’t have a relationship with the Holy Spirit, you’re probably fooling yourself and you’re not yet a believer. Take the list seriously and you will find God.

You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.

Jeremiah 29:13
