Blood is thicker than water

Describe a family member.

People get that wrong all the time. People misunderstand it to mean the family is more important than other relationships.

The phrase “Blood is thicker than water” did not mean that blood-related family members were to be considered as more important than anyone else—the original meaning was, “The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.” This is reflected in “… there is a friend [the Covenant-related word used in II Chronicles 20:7, ‘Are You not our God, … Abraham Your friend forever?’] that sticks closer than a brother.” [Proverbs 18:24].

Henry Clay Thrumbill

So who is family? Spiritual family lasts an eternity. Cults know this and take advantage of it. Yet some cultures insist that families of origin are more important. They stick together like Velcro and don’t do what they should with spiritual family. The result is a weakened spiritual relationship.

48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

Matthew 12

So even God gets it. Spiritual family is more important. The days are evil and we need spiritual family more than ever.

I was praying with spiritual family yesterday and realized this truth: this is forever family.

I’m a child of God who has found joy and peace in Jesus, the King of the universe. He alone is worthy of all praise and glory. I’m a bivocational pastor and vegan who crochets and talks all things Jesus.
